Notes: Caitlin Cary interview:  "This song is not about my parents. I do not have a terrible family who forced me to marry (I haven’t married yet). The inspiration was this great friend of mine — a crazy girl — who said she didn’t want to have a wedding dress; she was gonna get married in a cape. I said something about my mother’s wedding dress, about how tiny it was and that I would never be able to wear it. I’m not a very prolific songwriter because I don’t play guitar (though lately I’ve been wearing ditches in my fingers trying to learn how). So anything I write has to start with a melody, and then I have to find somebody who’s willing to sit there and listen to me sing it over and over again and figure out the guitar chords. The person who did that for "Matrimony" was Steve Grothman [Whiskeytown’s original bassist]."

Lyrics:

Well, I'm saving this dress for my wedding day
Momma wouldn't have it any other way
She says when she married, her waist was twenty three
I guess I'll never wear it anyway

I don't believe I care to marry
Though I cannot explain exactly why
It somehow seems to me that matrimony is misery
Simply a faster way to die

I'm saving all my money for my wedding day
You know my momma wouldn't have it any other way
She says when she married, she didn't have a dime
But I guess I'll spend that money some other way

Because I don't believe I care to marry
Though I cannot explain exactly why
It somehow seems to me that matrimony is misery
Simply a faster way to die

Well, I'm saving my best thing for my wedding day
Because my poppa wouldn't have it any other way
He says if I lose it early, I'll have thrown my life away
But I swear I'll use my cherry my own way

I don't believe I care to marry
Though I cannot explain exactly why
It somehow seems to me that matrimony is misery
Simply a faster way to die.
