The founding member of Pine State, Chris Riser was in the original lineup of Ryan's band Whiskeytown, playing lap steel. I think the only Whiskeytown recording that was released by that lineup was on the "Who the Hell?" Richard Hell tribute CD. I think this was released sometime in 1995 on Cred Factory. Pine State was also on the tribute and another band of mine, the BeatlesS, contributed a track as well. The Pine State stuff that Ryan played on was recorded during a college radio appearance. Pine State and Whiskeytown were often on the same bills at that time and they happened to be doing the radio show together. Ryan was given some stuff to bang on during the session and ended up being the guest percussionist. The songs from this session that appear on the Pine State CD set are covers of "Moanin' the Blues" and "There Stands The Glass", which appear on disc 2 ("Pine State's Mellow Madness" / "Rollin' with the Low Rollers" is a double CD). Those tracks were recorded on January 28, 1995. Sometime in late '95 and on through 1996 Pine State acquired a guitarist and pedal steel player named Nicholas Petti. Nicholas also began playing pedal steel in Whiskeytown and split time between the 2 bands. I think he left Whiskeytown in the summer of 1996 and I'm not sure if he ever recorded anything with them, though he did tour with them quite a bit during that time. Nicholas played on pretty much everything on disc 1 of the Pine State CD set. The CD set was released in November, 2000 on Hollow Bunny Records. |
