- Attendee Review: "Ryan was all business at the start of
this show. He played six songs solo with no spotlight, only dim
lighting. His voice was that send-a-tingle-
scampering-across-your-scalp type. He played two more songs with the
band before he said a word to the audience. I thought he might be
reacting to some Internet criticism from the night before. I thought
at first he was in one of those moods where he was out to prove
something, but once he began talking to us it was obvious he was in a
good mood and having fun. He told stories and jokes, but it was a
better mix than the day before. The show flowed much better and
was very entertaining in all aspects. I've seen Ryan perform more than
a dozen times dating back to Whiskeytown, and this was his best show,
along with October 2001 at Irving Plaza in NYC. He said
something revealing when he talked about why he did these shows
half-lit. Performing before a crowd is like giving a report in front
of class, he said. And back when he was in school, he always hit the
Nyquil before a report. He walked off stage after only about an
hour. It seemed to surprise the band, but they followed too. He came
back for the first encore and said he thought he had been playing a
long time. My guess is that he had to take a leak. Anybody Wanna
Take Me Home and When Stars Go Blue had beautiful dual-lead outros
with Ryan and his new guitarist (I'm sorry but I didn't catch his
name) playing off each other. Goose bump time. During Wharf Rat, he
substituted a line with "Thinking about Johnny Ramone, thinking
about Dee Dee Ramone, thinking about Joe Strummer and how they saved
my life." Before the second encore, a girl from the
audience got on stage, took the microphone and asked us: "Hey,
did you have a good time tonight? Then I can't hear you." We
roared in approval. She was ushered off the stage, and Ryan returned.
"What just happened out here?" he asked. His first song on
the second encore was Monsters and it was another one of those Ryan
moments. My wife, who is only a casual Ryan fan, had not heard this
song before, but couldn't stop talking about it on the way home.
