Review:
I've been waiting to see Ryan play solo for a long time!  Yesterday he gave his first Dutch show of this tour. (Don't believe the tour-T-shirt were it says: Goteborg - The Netherlands LOL) The 013 is a small but excellent venue in Tilburg and the concert was sold out. Ryan arrived very late (he had to fly in from Madrid and take the tourbus from Amsterdam with a couple of cabs in the middle, so there was little time for a decent soundcheck).  That didn't matter tho because the sound was excellent and Ryan's voice was in great shape!  He told the crowd that he'd been sleeping in the bus and that he dreamd that Chief had killed somebody, even after waking up he still believed that.  He fell asleep again and when he woke up for the second time he thought he'd already played the show! But before he started talking he came on stage sat down behind the grand piano and started to play (Sweet Lil' Gal) with a hat deep over his head. (He didn't say a word) After finishing the song he stepped in to the "light", put his hat even further down over his eyes and started with "To Be Young". The photographers from the newspapers started making pictures and Ryan turned around and finished the song with his back to the audience. When he sat down to sing "Firecracker" (without Chief this time) the crowd began to shout things and he finally started to respond. At first you could hardly hear him but later on he was all over the place joking and bantering.  We had noticed that there was no setlist and Chief told us (after the show) that Ryan had decided to play the rest of the tour without a setlist! When somebody called out for new songs he inmediately asked Chief for his notebook and started a few (not entirely) new songs: "Thank You Louise" and "I See Monsters" among them. He did one completely new song (at least for me it was) which was beautiful and reminded me of another song of his (don't know which one tho!) As I said: Ryan's voice was excellent! He hit all the high notes, even played a song (by accident) in the wrong (much higher) key! I didn't keep track of the setlist but you can find it on www.answeringbell.com. (I have to "correct" Stefan's list a little ;-) because as I recall, Ryan played "My Winding Wheel" before the three song encore which was: Dear Chicago/ You Will Always Be The Same and La Cienega Just Smiled.) = I was so impressed with Ry's performance that I had to look at the setlist Stefan provided to remember the songs he played! = He did a Whiskeytown song: "The Ballad Of Carol Lynn" (hope he does more in the (near) future)! He fell down while singing "Lovesick Blues"; he threw his harmonica on the ground after playing "Firecracker"; he dropped a wineglass on the floor and when he left the stage for the first time he threw his mike-stand into the monitors. One hilarious moment was when Ryan was behind stage (before the encore) and Chief put a big furry monkey with an operette mask and bullhorns on his head in Ryan's chair! Ryan almost freaked out when he saw that thing. He started playing with his back to the chair and after a little while he kicked the monkey out of the chair without looking!
Extra special: Ryan played (in full) a Bob Dylan version of "Like a Virgin". There wasn't anything Madonna in this version! It was a great show, even when Ryan stated it as: a "career-ender". Such a talented man with so much insecurities!  Wednesday it's off to Utrecht and I hope he will play as well as he did tonight!
