| Whiskeytown 400 Bar Minneapolis, Minnesota 3-21-98 Whiskeytown live is a little bit like playing Russian roulette with a psychopath: you never know quite what's going to happen, and the possibility of a bloodbath is ever-present. On this night, though, notorious frontman Ryan Adams (ably abetted by a lineup that, unfortunately, and not surprisingly, was destined not to last) forgot the stage antics and tantrums and just plain played his heart out. From a spellbinding "Dancing with the Women at the Bar" to a handful of fine new Stones-influenced songs, he treated us to a dazzling, maddening look at just how talented he is and just how much he can do with that talent...when he wants to. -Amy Haugesag |
